  • About J-PAL MENA at AUC: The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab’s Middle East and North Africa regional office is based at The American University in Cairo School of Business. 
  • J-PAL (povertyactionlab.org) is a global research center working to reduce poverty by ensuring that policy is informed by scientific evidence. Anchored by a network of more than 300 affiliated professors at universities around the world, J-PAL draws on results from randomized impact evaluations to answer critical questions in the fight against poverty. 
  • The Egypt Impact Lab (EIL) is a collaboration between the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MPED) and J-PAL MENA at AUC. EIL seeks to strengthen evidence-informed policy and improve development outcomes for Egyptians. The Lab was launched in 2022 with several strategic government and founding donor partners. The outcomes of EIL are to evaluate promising and innovative government programs and use results to inform scale decisions; build government capacity to use rigorous evidence to strengthen program design and delivery; and foster the use of partner ministries’ administrative data to generate evidence and improve decision-making. 
  • The Egypt Impact Lab Associate will support all activities of the Lab, including policy outreach and partnership building, capacity building event planning and delivery, research competition administration, and  coordination of Lab work within J-PAL MENA at AUC and with counterparts in MPED.  
  • The Associate will play a key role in supporting partnerships with governments, NGOs, and donors to support the generation and use of evidence on national policy priorities in Egypt. 
  • S/he should be passionate about working with different stakeholders to enhance development policy, leveraging rigorous evidence to make recommendations. 
  • Being a part of the Egypt Impact Lab, and connected to J-PAL MENA’s Policy & Communications team, s/he will connect the dots between economics and policy. 

Egypt Impact Lab coordination, working closely with Egypt Impact Lab Director:

  • Organize biweekly EIL staff meeting, prepare agenda, facilitate meeting
  • Edit and send bi-weekly email update roundup
  • Coordinate with counterpart in MPED
  • Serve as rapporteur for EIL Steering Committee, including fixing date, preparing agenda, taking notes, and documenting and circulating decisions
  • Manage and maintain EIL shared electronic files
  • Support all EIL recruitment
  • Manage EIL listservs

External Communications:

  • Maintain EIL branded templates
  • Update EIL “about us” deck and support on all EIL presentations
  • Prepare social media content about EIL
  • Prepare press releases and coordinate with communications counterparts

Event Planning and Execution:

  • Lead event planning preparations for all EIL events (conferences, workshops, roundtables, trainings), with support from Finance & Operations team, both on campus at AUC and at outside premises, including reservations, agenda development and design, coordination preparation of presentations and other event collateral, interface with print shop, website set-up, email invitations, day-of set-up, participant follow-up, additional needs as required for VIP events

Coordinate competitive research fund to generate evidence on priority policy issues:

  • Work closely with AUC and J-PAL MENA Finance & Operations to manage all submissions to the Egypt Impact Lab RFP
  • Work closely with AUC and J-PAL MENA Finance & Operations to create subaward system
  • Serve as rapporteur for RFP Review Board meetings, including fixing date, preparing agenda, taking notes, and documenting and circulating decisions
  • Communicate RFP decisions to research team
  • Communicate with funded research teams on a regular basis and ensure their technical and financial 

Job Requirements

  • Education:         
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s  degree in economics, public policy, or a closely related field including coursework in microeconomics, econometrics, and development economics
  • Experience:         
  • Minimum 4 years of experience; 2 of them with relevant work experience, including work related to poverty reduction, public policy, impact evaluations, and evidence-informed policymaking;
  • Significant training in economics at the undergraduate or masters level;
  • Prior professional experience working in policy design, implementation, or evaluation is preferred;
  • Prior professional experience in event planning, center administration, or team coordination a plus.

  • Exceptionally strong self-management and organizational skills
  • Detailed oriented and advanced writing skills, including proven ability to communicate policy lessons from technical academic research to a non-technical audience
  • Handles multiple projects at once with little supervision, meet deadlines, and practice effective time management
  • Manage projects  and tasks effectively and proactively
  • Fluent in both Arabic and English
  • Comfortable to work with computer applications (Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Asana, and SalesForce)
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills, detail-orientation, ability to take initiative and work proactively, and crisp verbal and written communication skills, together with teamwork and analytical ability will be central to this role.
