Job Description

Project Overview

The Kano State Government, through the Ministry of Water Resources, is implementing an ambitious and strategic initiative to improve access to clean and safe water for its urban and rural populations. The project involves constructing new water supply plants, rehabilitating existing ones, and upgrading operational systems, including chemical treatment processes, to ensure the delivery of potable water that meets national and international quality standards.

The Kano State Government of Nigeria, West Africa is in the process of building new Water Supply Plants along with the rehabilitation of existing ones. This process will cover general improvement of the water supply infrastructure, maintenance of high capacity Generators, maintenance of Raw Water and High Lift Pumps as well as the maintenance of other electro-mechanical equipment. The overall objective of the entire program is to rejuvenate and enhance the water supply infrastructure and the process of portable water supply to the Urban and Rural Areas of Kano State. 

Towards meeting this cardinal objective, the Kano State Government is desirous of obtaining the services of qualified and experienced professionals to be employed to work in Kano State, Nigeria to participate in the planned portable water supply program. Consequently, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Cairo ,Egypt hereby, on behalf of the Kano State Government, invites applications from interested and qualified professionals 

Position Summary

The Chemical Engineer will be responsible for overseeing the design, operation, and optimization of chemical treatment processes at water treatment plants. The role involves ensuring water quality through the proper application of coagulants, disinfectants, and other treatment chemicals. The Chemical Engineer will also conduct laboratory analyses, support quality assurance activities, and help train plant operators in water treatment best practices.

key Responsibilities

Design and optimize chemical dosing systems for coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection processes.

Monitor and control the use of water treatment chemicals (e.g., alum, chlorine, lime) to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective operations.

Conduct routine water quality testing and interpret results to adjust treatment parameters accordingly.

Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for chemical handling, dosing, and laboratory testing.

Work closely with plant operators to ensure consistent water quality and compliance with regulatory standards 

Participate in the commissioning and rehabilitation of water treatment facilities, focusing on chemical treatment processes.

Assist in the procurement and inventory management of treatment chemicals and laboratory reagents.

Train operational staff in chemical safety, quality control procedures, and environmental compliance.

Prepare technical reports, test results, and quality assurance documentation for government and regulatory bodies.

 

Job Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, or a related field. A Master's degree is an added advantage.

Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in water or wastewater treatment, public health engineering, or process engineering.

Knowledge of chemical processes used in large-scale water treatment systems.

Familiarity with laboratory equipment and water quality testing procedures.

Professional registration with a recognized engineering or scientific body (e.g., COREN, NSE, ICCON) is preferred.

Proficiency in technical reporting, data analysis, and quality control systems.

Experience working with rural or urban water supply systems in developing contexts is a plus.
