Job Description
The Kano State Government of Nigeria, West Africa is in the process of building new Water Supply Plants along with the rehabilitation of existing ones. This process will cover general improvement of the water supply infrastructure, maintenance of high capacity Generators, maintenance of Raw Water and High Lift Pumps as well as the maintenance of other electro-mechanical equipment. The overall objective of the entire program is to rejuvenate and enhance the water supply infrastructure and the process of portable water supply to the Urban and Rural Areas of Kano State.
Towards meeting this cardinal objective, the Kano State Government is desirous of obtaining the services of qualified and experienced professionals to be employed to work in Kano State, Nigeria to participate in the planned portable water supply program. Consequently, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria hereby, on behalf of the Kano State Government, invites applications from interested and qualified professionals .
Position Summary
The Scientific Officer will be responsible for water quality assessment, environmental monitoring, laboratory testing, and reporting on compliance with national and international standards for potable water. The officer will work closely with engineers, chemists, environmental scientists, and operations teams to support informed decision-making in the water supply program.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct sampling, laboratory analysis, and field testing of raw and treated water from various sources and treatment facilities.
- Monitor water quality indicators (e.g., pH, turbidity, residual chlorine, conductivity, microbiological content) in compliance with WHO and Nigerian drinking water standards.
- Assist in identifying contamination sources and support strategies to prevent waterborne diseases.
- Maintain detailed laboratory records, data logs, and analytical reports.
- Calibrate and maintain laboratory instruments and field-testing equipment.
- Prepare scientific reports and recommend actions for treatment adjustments or environmental interventions.
- Ensure safety and quality assurance protocols are followed in laboratory and field operations.
- Support public health and environmental awareness campaigns as needed.
- Participate in research and data collection efforts to support long-term water resource planning and sustainability.
Job Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Environmental Science, or related scientific field. Master’s degree is an advantage.
- Minimum of 2–5 years of experience in laboratory testing, environmental monitoring, or water quality assessment.
- Knowledge of water treatment processes, environmental health regulations, and public safety standards.
- Experience using laboratory equipment (e.g., spectrophotometers, incubators, turbidity meters, pH meters).
- Familiarity with NAFDAC, WHO, and Nigerian water quality guidelines.
- Computer literacy, including use of data analysis and scientific reporting tools.
- Experience working in government, water utility, or environmental projects is desirable.
