Job Description
- The Editor produces, edits, and revises a range of texts aimed at informing public audiences and positioning the ICRC on a wide variety of topics.
- S/he identifies issues, stories, and angles and suggests the appropriate format. S/he supports efforts to enhance acceptance of the ICRC's mission, activities, and strategic objectives, improve its access to people in need and strengthen its reputation and brand. S/he also helps build trust in and secure support for the ICRC among a broad range of stakeholders (media, political, diplomatic, and financial).
1. SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES
- Planning and generating ideas: The editor of the RCC's bi-annual "Al-Insani" magazine and blog https://blogs.icrc.org/alinsani/ participates in setting the plan and concept of each new issue. He/she is aware of the main activities and humanitarian issues of concern to the ICRC in the Middle East and beyond and uses this knowledge to generate ideas for the magazine in conjunction with the managing editor and ICRC network in the different offices.
- Content creation: He/she creates content packages including writing texts and visual materials that resonate well with the audience of the blog and the website. This includes conducting interviews, writing articles in different journalistic forms, creating podcasts and posts that could be used on the magazine, blog, Facebook or website as needed.
- He/she support the managing editor in monitoring and reporting on the performance of the blog; and develop strategies to enhance the online experience of the audience using SEO and other advanced WordPress features.
- Follow up, contacting writers and writing: He/she support the managing editor when needed on coordinating with delegations on the articles to be published from their respective contexts and discussing the main ideas and angles. He/she proposes authors or asks delegations to propose authors to be assigned specific attributions and follows up directly when needed with the author on matters related to the article (specifications, deadline, editing or change, etc). He/she ensures receiving the requested article on time.
- Editing: He/she edits content for Al-Insani and the Arabic website based on the planned editorial calendar and priorities and in coordination with the managing editor. He/she assures that all articles comply with the editorial line of the magazine, and edits them if need be, while at the same time trying to preserve the original content and style of the author as much as possible.
- Pre-press work: The editor supports the managing editor in revising the draft magazine proposed by the designer, and provides any content needed to ensure the finalization of the magazine on time.
- Promotion: the editor proposes ideas to the managing editor to enhance the online and offline promotion of the magazine to reach a wider public and engages as needed in a dialogue with delegations to keep their distribution lists updated and to increase the readership in their respective country. He/she coordinates with the Digital team on promoting content for the organization’s social media channels such as Facebook Twitter, and YouTube, and through regular newsletter, to maximize the impact and reach of the blog.
- 2. OFFICE ACTIVITIES
- Reporting:
The editor participates in weekly, quarterly, biannual, and ad-hoc reports as needed. - Administration – Finance
Ensures necessary administrative work is implemented on time. Supports the managing editor in preparing contracts and payments for external contributors.
Knows, applies, and complies with all the administrative procedures linked to his/her work Keeps an up-to-date archiving of the magazine (original articles, edited articles, Photos used, filing of important messages) and administrative files (contracts) at all times. - Interpretation – Translation
Occasionally translates documents from English to Arabic and vice versa as required.
Job Requirements
- University degree in journalism, communications, political science, public relations, or any relevant field is required.
- Six years or more of proven work experience in printed/online journalism or content creation in general.
- Excellent writing and editing skills in Arabic with very good command of English.
- Confirmed capacity to analyze the political and social environment of the Middle East
- Solid understanding of various social media channels.
- Team player and respectful towards others.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
