Northwestern University in Qatar invites applications from highly qualified candidates for a full-time open rank faculty appointment in Media Analytics, to be appointed in the Communication Program. We seek candidates with an active research agenda that focuses on media analytics in the Global South, with preference given to scholars who focus on Africa, the Arab world, or South Asia, whose work is comparative or transnational, whose work includes such areas as the quantitative study of big data, AI, machine learning, algorithm design, coding, web analytics, data analytics, and data mining, and who include ethics, gender, race, and/or coloniality in their analysis. We expect successful candidates to have a Ph.D. by the time of appointment in media studies or communication, or from related interdisciplinary backgrounds, and to have linguistic competence and field experience in their research area.NU-Q is a globally embedded institution; it is one of three campuses of Northwestern University (Chicago, Doha, Evanston) and one of several institutions in the Qatar Foundation’s Education City in Doha, Qatar. Our mission is to mentor and educate students to become creative, ethical, and impactful communicators across cultural and national boundaries. Located at the confluence of continents, NU-Q is a diverse global community with approximately 500 students from 60 countries. Candidates will have the opportunity to contribute to our distinctive Institute for Advanced Study in the Global South (#IAS_NUQ), a community of evidence-based storytellers devoted to understanding the media, cultures, societies, politics, and history of the countries of the Global South. This includes mentoring our Undergraduate Global Fellows, participating in reading and research groups, and contributing to panels, seminars, conferences, and publications.In addition to a demonstrated publication track record or evidence of a highly promising trajectory commensurate with career stage and/or rank, applicants should show competence in working with globally diverse communities, a strong commitment to excellence in inclusive teaching and mentoring, and dedication to institutional service and shared governance. Responsibilities include teaching courses in the Communication Program and elective courses that speak to their field, as well as contributing to NU-Q’s curricular demands. These could include the Doha Seminar honors course, graduate seminars, executive education classes, or courses qualifying for our university’s growing number of interdisciplinary minors, such as Africana Studies, Film and Design, Middle East Studies, Media and Politics, and Strategic Communication.NU-Q provides competitive compensation and benefits. The medium of instruction is English, but proficiency in Arabic or another regional language is an advantage at NU-Q. Candidates with experience in US higher education as well as in the Arab region, women, and persons from traditionally underrepresented groups in academia are particularly encouraged to apply.
