Job Description

Organization

The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) promotes sustainable and equitable transport worldwide. ITDP is a nonprofit organization headquartered in New York City with offices in Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico and the United States. ITDP’s programs focus on the promotion of public transport, non-motorized transport, travel demand management and urban development. More information about ITDP can be found at www.itdp.org.

ITDP has played a role in several projects in the African region, including the implementation of high-quality bus rapid transit (BRT) systems, bicycle networks and pedestrian projects. ITDP played a pivotal role in the implementation of Johannesburg’s silver-standard Rea Vaya BRT corridors and in Cape Town’s bronze-standard MyCiTi BRT. ITDP also supported the development of the Dar Rapid Transit BRT system in Dar es Salaam. ITDP is currently working in partnership with UN-Habitat and the New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA) to plan a first-phase BRT system for Greater Cairo. ITDP is also preparing plans for a bicycle sharing system and bike lane network in downtown Cairo.

Position:

The Transport Planning Intern will provide support to the Africa team over a three-month period (with a possibility of extension) in the form of field surveys, data analysis, mapping and report preparation. Potential project areas will include BRT, complete streets, parking management, and urban development. The specific focus area can be tailored to the interests of the Intern. The Transport Planning Intern will be based in Cairo and will report to the Transport Planning Consultant, Cairo.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and carry out transport surveys.
  • Collect, process and analyze transport data.
  • Assist with mapping and setup of transport models.
  • Preparation of conceptual designs for walking and cycling facilities and BRT corridors.
  • Prepare project reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in transport planning, transport engineering, city planning or other relevant field.
  • AUC, GUC, Cairo university and Ain Shams graduates is a must
  • Familiarity with transport planning, including survey design and management, demand analysis and network planning.
  • Experience in street design and drafting using AutoCAD, spatial analysis using GIS software and data analysis using Excel and Access required.
  • Familiarity with the Adobe suite preferred.
  • Excellent writing skills in English and Arabic.
  • Strong commitment to advancing ITDP’s mission and to environmental and social justice.
  • Excellent research and analytical skills; enjoy working with numbers!
  • Ability to communicate well and make powerful presentations.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects, even when under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain high standards while contributing pragmatic ideas.
  • Availability to travel frequently.
