BBC Arabic is a multi-platform 24-hour service, providing news and information to audiences across the Arab world and beyond on TV, Radio and Online. The output is modern in style and outlook and adheres to BBC values of accuracy and impartiality.
BBC XTRA is the flagship news magazine pan-Arab program on BBC Arabic Radio. Youthful and modern style, it was launched in 2005 and has an excellent reputation for creativity and hard hitting social affairs stories as well as the latest from the worlds of arts, culture, science, technology and more. This is delivered over 90 mins every weekday with a special two hour edition every Saturday in a modern and relaxed presentation style.
We are seeking a Senior Broadcast Journalist to join our team and act as a team leader and program presenter on a 12 month fixed term contract based in Cairo. The BBC XTRA team is hard working and well organized with excellent team spirit, something that the new team-leader will need to maintain.
As part of your application you will be asked for links (URLs) demonstrating your presentation skills.
Role Responsibility
- You will take editorial responsibility for the day-to-day program output, as well as being involved in presenting BBC Xtra live on radio; this includes performing at the microphone with or without a script, conducting interviews and chairing discussions, live or pre-recorded.
- However this is not purely an editorial role. Whichever area you work in, a large part of your role will be to manage Broadcast Journalists and other production staff. You will ensure that the best journalism from BBC Arabic is properly shared with all platforms and the rest of the BBC.
- Your role will still mainly include researching, writing, translating, and editing or adapting items, stories or program material.
Job Requirements
Are you the right candidate?
- You will need recent and significant experience as a Broadcast Journalist, and proven experience in managing a team.
- You should be fluent in Arabic, with full command of Arabic grammar. Also essential is excellent English language skills, both written and spoken.
- You should have an up to date and comprehensive knowledge of Middle East and international issues current affairs, political and non-political.
- An excellent understanding of the role of social media and digital media in our journalism is necessary.
- You will be motivating and have the skills of bringing new ideas and stories to the BBC Arabic team.
- Wide range of contacts across the Arab world is highly desirable.
It is important that you are able to be flexible with your working hours, willing to travel when necessary sometimes at a short notice.
