Job Description
The GIS Specialist will be responsible for the geospatial data management and the design of OSP (Outside Plant) fiber optic networks. This role involves creating, maintaining, and analyzing spatial data while also supporting detailed fiber network design including route planning, duct and cable layout, and splice point documentation. The ideal candidate will work closely with design engineers, field teams, and planning departments to deliver accurate, optimized network designs and GIS outputs.
Key Responsibilities:
• Develop and maintain GIS datasets and mapping layers for fiber optic networks, including ducts, cables, splice closures, manholes, handholes, and equipment locations.
• Perform fiber network design and layout for OSP, including feeder, distribution, and drop segments (e.g., FTTx, GPON).
• Translate engineering drawings and field data into GIS-ready formats and detailed design schematics.
• Collaborate with planning and engineering teams to identify optimal fiber paths using GIS spatial analysis and desktop surveys.
• Generate construction-ready drawings, splice diagrams, and bill of materials (BoM) using GIS and CAD tools.
• Integrate GIS data with other systems (AutoCAD, fiber management platforms, or asset management systems).
• Perform field validations and update GIS data accordingly to reflect as-built conditions.
• Prepare permit drawings and compliance maps in line with regulatory requirements.
• Ensure spatial data accuracy, topology integrity, and adherence to industry and organizational standards.
Job Requirements
Qualifications & Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field.
• 3+ years of experience in GIS and/or OSP fiber network design, ideally in the telecommunications industry.
• Proficient with GIS software (ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS) and CAD tools (AutoCAD, MicroStation).
• Strong understanding of OSP fiber optic design, including topology types (Ring, Star, PON), cable sizing, and route planning.
• Familiarity with fiber design tools like 3-GIS, Vetro FiberMap, GE Smallworld, or similar platforms.
• Knowledge of spatial databases, coordinate systems, and geoprocessing techniques.
• Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving, and documentation skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments.
