Job Description
Acoustic Design & Analysis
Conduct detailed acoustical analyses, modeling, and simulations for architectural, environmental, and mechanical noise control.
Develop comprehensive acoustical design strategies for diverse building types, with a specialized focus on performance spaces (opera houses, concert halls, theatres) and their unique reverberation, isolation, and sound diffusion needs.
Specify appropriate acoustical materials, construction methods, and noise/vibration control treatments.
Electronics & Mechanical Design Integration & Noise Control
Provide expert acoustical input and design solutions for Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems, including HVAC noise attenuation, ductwork acoustics, fan noise, and plumbing noise control.
Design and specify vibration isolation systems for mechanical equipment (e.g., chillers, pumps, air handling units) to prevent structure-borne noise.
Collaborate closely with MEP engineers to ensure integrated and effective noise and vibration solutions from the design phase.
Project Management & Coordination
Lead and manage the acoustics scope of work for multiple projects concurrently, ensuring deliverables are met on time and within budget.
Act as the primary point of contact for clients, architects, MEP teams, contractors, and other stakeholders regarding acoustical matters.
Review architectural, structural, and MEP drawings and specifications for acoustical compliance and potential issues.
Site Supervision & Testing
Conduct site visits, perform acoustic measurements (sound insulation, reverberation time, noise levels), and commission acoustical systems.
Oversee the implementation of acoustical designs during construction, ensuring adherence to specifications and quality standards.
Troubleshoot and resolve on-site acoustical issues, providing practical and effective solutions.
Reporting & Documentation
Prepare detailed acoustical reports, technical specifications, and design documentation.
Present findings, recommendations, and design solutions to clients and project teams in a clear and concise manner.
Research & Development
Stay abreast of the latest advancements, technologies, and best practices in architectural acoustics, mechanical noise control, and performance venue design.
Contribute to the continuous improvement of internal acoustical methodologies and tools.
Mentorship & Quality Assurance
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior acousticians and project team members.
Perform peer reviews of acoustical designs and analyses
EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor's degree in Acoustics, Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
Experience
Minimum of 12 years of progressive professional experience in architectural acoustics and noise control consulting.
Demonstrable and extensive experience in the acoustical design and delivery of major performance venues, specifically opera houses, concert halls, or large theatres.
Technical Skills
Proficiency in industry-standard acoustical modeling and prediction software (e.g., Odeon, CATT-Acoustic, EASE, SoundPLAN, CadnaA).
Expertise in noise and vibration measurement equipment and analysis (e.g., sound level meters, accelerometers, FFT analyzers).
Strong understanding of architectural design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit) for integrating acoustical elements.
Deep knowledge of international and regional acoustical standards and guidelines (e.g., ASTM, ISO, NC/NR Curves, ASHRAE, LEED).
Solid understanding of mechanical engineering principles related to fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and structural mechanics.
Soft Skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities.
Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
Proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
Strong project management skills, including planning, organization, and execution.
