Job Description

We are seeking an Assistant Editor to join our Arabic Digital Production Hub in Cairo on a fixed term contract basis.As Assistant Editor, you will plan and organize the daily and long-term Newsgathering plans from BBC Cairo Bureau in close coordination with the Planning and Newsgathering teams in London. Key responsibilities as follows:Maximize impact and diversify content including, but not limited to political cultural, social and humanitarian events and developments and put into practice BBC policies on diversity and inclusion.Ensure that Arabic content from Egypt appeals to all audiences but in particular ensures our output is enjoyed by our female audiences and young people.Liaise closely with BBC teams in London about any major developments in the media scene in Egypt, providing advice on development opportunities in Egypt and ensuring there is a constant exchange of ideas and information.Support and implement BBC Equal Opportunity policies and programmes.With BBC Equal Opportunities policies in mind, to help with recruitment, motivate, train and develop and inspire a diverse team of journalists working in BBC Cairo Bureau; to line-manage staff effectively, ensuring rotas work well and annual appraisals are carried out regularly and in an inclusive way.Work with Senior Journalists to ensure that the quality of all output is maintained at the highest level, to ensure creative ways of tacking stories are adopted.Ensure that the quality of all output and journalism in the BBC Cairo Bureau is maintained at the highest level and that it conforms to BBC Editorial Guidelines and the developing style of BBC Arabic. Ensure that Arabic audiences benefit from the ‘added value’ brought by having a presence in one of the most important centres in the Arab world.Supervise, organize and plan wide ranging and special multiplatform coverage, briefing journalists and giving feedback.Oversee the daily work of the bureau and ensure excellent planning for the following days' coverage, bearing in mind respective budgets.Originate, consider and advise on creative ideas and stories and supervise reports and producers in order to deliver the best quality journalism across all platforms.Are you the right candidate?You will be either a professional journalist or a senior operational professional with extensive editorial experience of broadcast news and the ability to develop and implement new and innovative approaches to programme structure and content. With proven editorial judgement, you will be able to make sound decisions promptly. You will have a detailed understanding of current techniques and technology for newsgathering and production. An ability to use new technologies to create opportunities to enhance output and improve working practices. In addition:Identify a concept along with the plans which need to be implemented to meet the end goal. Evaluate situations, decisions, issues etc. in the short, medium and longer-term. Demonstrate a commitment to improving diversity in the BBC and understands how individual differences can benefit the BBC.Outstanding Arabic and English language skills.Excellent understanding of the challenges facing BBC Arabic in Egypt and in the wider region.Strong understanding and working knowledge of digital video techniques and social media broadcasting.Excellent independent and balanced editorial judgement.Good knowledge of the output of the World Service and its aims and objectives and the programme needs of other parts of the BBC.Package details:Contract: FTC/Attachment starting early May – ending early November 2024Band: ELocation: Cairo Bureau, EgyptFinal day to apply: April 10 2024Any offer of employment with the BBC will be conditional upon you having the right to work in Egypt where local Egyptian terms and conditions apply.About the BBCWe don’t focus simply on what we do – we also care how we do it.
