Job Description

Médecins Sans Frontièrès - Belgium (MSF - Belgium) in Giza is recruiting a

NURSE   

Médecins Sans Frontièrès (MSF – Doctors without Borders) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and exclusion from healthcare. MSF offers assistance to people based on need, irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation. MSF is therefore guided by the principles of neutrality and impartiality. These principles must apply to all MSF staff.

 

Main Purpose
 

Providing nursing care, treatment and follow-up of patients, according to doctors’ prescriptions, protocols applied in service and universal hygiene standards/precautions, in order to ensure the quality and continuity of care for the targeted population

 

 

Accountabilities
 

 

  • Knowing, promoting, implementing and following up the universal hygiene standards/ precautions, bio-hazard prevention and infection control, security rules and other protocols and procedures in the medical premises and ensuring high standards of hygiene of his/her working environment. Respecting medical secrets and confidentiality at all times.
  • Organizing and carrying out care and treatments according to medical prescriptions, and assisting during consultations, daily rounds and other medical procedures. Participating in health education of the patient (and family) when necessary.
  • Identifying Sexually Gender Based Violence victims and referring them to the medical team so they can receive the necessary treatment. Knowing and is aware of the importance and appropriate use of the Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) Kit
  • Ensuring patients are properly received and installed and that those with lack of autonomy are assisted, especially regarding their feeding, personal hygiene, movements and comfort. For ER and OPD nurse, ensuring triage of patients in waiting areas, wards or during emergencies, detecting the priority acute/emergency cases, carrying out first aid care and referring them to the doctor when necessary
  • Sending material to be sterilized and recuperates it from sterilization
  • Carrying out admission, surveillance and follow-up of patients (i.e., assessment of the evolution of their state of health and the identification of any emergency situation or deterioration
  • Carrying and supervising administrative procedures and documents (fill in patient’s files, forms, consumptions, statistics, registers, health files, etc.), ensuring an appropriate written/oral handover, and reporting any problematic situations and cases that may arise. Participating in data collection and keeping doctors/supervisors informed.
  • Participating in the department-related pharmacy and medical equipment control and maintenance (quality and its functioning, storage conditions, follow-up of expired drugs inventories, stock takes of medicines and material at every team changeover ensuring no material is taken out of nursing area/wards without prior authorization, etc.)
  • Perform cleaning and minor maintenance for biomedical equipment used. Fol-lowing the user manual and protocols and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning.
  • Supervising and training nurse-aids, nutritional assistants, cleaners and other related staff under his/her supervision, ensuring teamwork and adherence to all appropriate protocols and procedures

 

MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities

The MSF project in Giza runs an outpatient clinic that offers a comprehensive package of care. This package includes medical care, psychological care, social support (referrals) and physiotherapy. Each patient has a personalized treatment plan. A strong community component has also been developed and Mental Health services are provided at community level.

  • Maintaining clean and organized the sterilization area/room and equipment, recognizing all instruments as per the provided diagrams, cleaning all instruments in the sterilization solution and running them through the sterilizer, organizing all instruments for packaging, packing the instruments according to the sets as directed by the supervisor and labelling all sets correctly with the expiry date clearly indicated.
  • Responsible for the emergency rooms medical equipment and ultrasound room and update the emergency trolley following schedule and on request.
  • Inform regularly about pre ruptures and ruptures to his/her supervisor and technical reference.
  • Provide counselling for medication to patients according to medical prescription, ensuring the medication is labelled with the correct drug name, dose, quantity, expiry date, directions for use and additional required information and providing clear instructions and advice on how to take the drug, when, how long, how to store, possible side-effects and any other relevant warnings. Making sure the patient understands in order to ensure correct treatment.
  • Maintain accurate stock records and regularly reporting them to his/her supervisor and technical reference. Ensure that expired items are safely removed to a well designated quarantine zone for unwanted pharmaceuticals, separated from the normal stock.
  • Perform quick medical screening and assessment to new patients and existing patients on medical or psychological problems and initiate medical care according to the triage category; and inform the clinician on timely manner.
  • Prioritizes & sorts emergency patients received at the triage office and passes them through to the MDT responsible for emergencies.
  • Assists doctors with procedures and exams in the emergency situations / first aid when needed.
  • Performing rapid laboratory tests and carrying out sample collection in accordance with prescriptions as well as ensuring that quality control tests are carried out regularly. Informing doctors with the results of tests and keeping a record of the analysis with data from patients.
  • Ensuring proper cleaning, maintenance, and arranging of all laboratory equipment and the adequate supply of needed equipment and material in order to prevent stock-out, through informing your line manager if you notice any item will be ruptured or expired. This includes being responsible for all required automatic instrument calibration, ensuring that no material is taken out of laboratories without prior authorization from your line manager, carrying out a proper storage system and conditions, inventory, etc. ,and ensuring that cold chain is properly followed and monitored in Laboratory areas.
  • Producing regular reports on the testing and on any issues / problems related to laboratory tests.
  • Ensuring safe and correct administration of the vaccination according to the specific vaccine requirements according to MSF protocol.
  • Provide the nursing part of Antenatal Care and Post-natal care for women through advising mothers about the importance of breastfeeding, vaccination, baby/mother care and alarming signs that need medical attention.
  • Prepare, assist MD and follow-up family planning procedures in consultation rooms, while strictly applying hygiene protocols.
  • Follow up and provide counselling for family planning methods for patients and inform MD is there is any side effect from the method or if patient want to change to another method.
  • Assist in the administrative procedures assigned by the line manager (Reports -Data collection).
  • Carrying out other duties as assigned by the line manager.

Job Requirements

Education

Essential:Bachelor’s Degree in nursing

 

 
Experience

 Essential: Minimum of 1 years of previous experience in general nursing;

Desirable:  Previous working experience in an other NGO’s 

 

 
Languages

Essential: Fluent in both English and Arabic (oral and written)

 

 
KnowledgeEssential: Computer literacy (Microsoft Office,).
