• Job Details:I worked as a quality engineer at Green Land Company, where we sorted onions according to European specifications to be ready for export.My primary responsibility was ensuring each batch met the rigorous standards for size, shape, and freedom from defects. We had a whole system, really. Incoming onions would rumble down a conveyor belt, and my team and I would be positioned along it, eyes peeled. We’d pull out any that were bruised, cut, sprouting, or just plain misshapen. Size was crucial too – too big, too small, both rejected. We used calibrated rings to quickly check diameter, a surprisingly efficient process once you got the hang of it. We also had to be vigilant for signs of disease, like neck rot or mold. A single bad onion could contaminate a whole crate, jeopardizing the entire shipment. It was a demanding job, requiring constant attention and a keen eye for detail. Believe me, after a few months, you could practically smell a dodgy onion from across the room!
