Lab Technician

Safety

• Ensuring that all safety equipment and associated protocols are implemented in the science labs and preparation rooms
• Ensuring that all waste storage and disposal of hazardous materials is accomplished according to school safety and waste management procedures
• Ensuring that all labs have appropriate safety signage and are routinely inspected to ensure that all safety equipment functions properly
• Ensuring that all chemicals, equipment, samples, organics, and solutions are stored in their correct locations, including refrigerators, safety cabinets of various types, and general storage and that they are clearly labelled
• Ensuring a tidy workspace at all times
• Creating, maintaining, and updating Lab Handbooks, Materials Safety Data Sheets for all chemicals, hazard cards, recipes, and other safety information is accomplished routinely in accordance with CLEAPPS 
• Providing chemical hazard cards to teachers every time chemicals are used in a class
• Removing any equipment, materials, chemicals, samples, and waste at the end of each science class immediately
• Ensuring that any Middle States, AIAA, IB, CLEAPPS and other school-associated organizations’ standards are met in the science labs and preparation rooms
• Ensuring written Science Laboratory Risk Assessments are in place for all equipment, apparatus and materials prior to their uses
• Ensuring that no student or unauthorized person enters the preparation rooms

Maintenance and Storage

• Ensuring that an inventory of all lab equipment, both consumables and non-consumables, is created and maintained
• Updating the Inventory  each term
• Daily reporting any losses of non-consumables such as glassware to Inventory
• Ensuring the proper cleaning and storage of all equipment and materials
• Maintaining a register of maintenance and/or repair undertaken on equipment

Teaching and Learning

• Working in collaboration with science teachers to prepare and set up experiments and/or demonstrations
• Working with teaching staff to prepare orders of teaching resources 
• Assisting the teacher as requested in conducting experiments and working with students
