Job Description
- Provide expert counselling services and programs to students.
- Meet with students one on one. Help students define aspects of their lives (behavioral, emotional, developmental, affective, and/or situational) which are presenting difficulty and are interfering with academic performance and success. This includes clinical and psychotherapeutic interventions for mental health issues – either undiagnosed or diagnosed by other services on campus or in the community.
- Work with students to develop an intervention plan which will allow them to continue functioning and ideally remediate the situation.
- Communicate with Student Psychologist, Psychiatrist or School Counselor if needed to assess the student case.
- Make recommendations for University faculty and staff regarding student cases.
- Meet parents when required to work with the parent on a plan for an academic accommodation or mental health recommendations provided that the confidentiality agreement is not breached.
- Providing training, guidance and support to staff of the University on matters concerning student mental and emotional wellbeing.
- Ensuring the implementation of policies and practices within the University related to student mental wellness and student accommodations (academic and nonacademic accommodations).
- Preparing guidelines, forms, processes, and procedures for student counseling.
- Aligning with Academic Mentoring Program on students who may have learning disabilities or mental health issues that may affect their academic discourse.
- Run activities that support the emotional and mental growth of students.
- Design and implement effective outreach programs to help students meet some of their developmental needs.
- Acting on emergencies that happen on campus due to emotional or mental breakdowns that may jeopardize the safety of the student or the community.
- Any other task assigned by the manager or area director.
Job Requirements
- Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology or equivalent
- Professional counseling experience required, in a university setting preferred.
- A specialism in one of the Psycho assessment methods such as but not limited to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Knowledge of psychological disorders and diagnostic skills are essential.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential.
