Job Description

Reuters is seeking a resourceful and energetic correspondent in Egypt to help break news and deliver initiative stories to deepen our financial, business and commodities file at an interesting moment for the country. Egypt is seeking to recover from a long period of stagnation with an injection of foreign cash, even though the government has yet to prove its economic policies match its ambition.



Based in Cairo, you will need to show the ability to cover stories ranging from foreign investment to wheat tenders. The successful candidate will have the skill to handle breaking news, the determination to build contacts and the proven ability to generate story ideas in a country where the government is sensitive to criticism and businesses are often wary of speaking up. You will be able to show persistence and determination to report even when the going gets tough. While the post is focused on financial and business news, you will be a team player, ready to step in to cover other areas of the file where necessary.



You will work closely with the bureau chief and colleagues in Cairo, as well as with regional colleagues in the Gulf and beyond. This will include working with our energy and commodities team in Dubai to help handle Egypt’s vital wheat tenders which can be announced late at night. While no prior experience in covering commodities is required, the ability and readiness to learn is needed. Excellent Arabic is vital for the role, alongside good writing skills in English.



The position is not on International Assignment terms.


About the Role


As our Egypt correspondent, you will:


  • Demonstrate the ability to build business, financial and other sources to break news


  • Show strong news judgement and the determination and persistence needed to report out stories


  • Be a self-start with the initiative to generate story ideas and develop lines for reporting


  • Coordinate with the Dubai-based regional commodities correspondent on Egypt’s wheat and commodities tenders


  • Have fluent Arabic language skills, alongside good writing skills in English


  • Be ready to help with the broader day-to-day coverage of the Egypt file where required.



About You


To be our Egypt correspondent, you will likely:


  • Have a track record over several years in news reporting and source building


  • Have examples of published initiative stories involving multiple sources


  • Have fluent Arabic


  • Be able to demonstrate good English news writing skills


  • Be able to show determination, persistence and enthusiasm to deliver a well-reported stories to Reuters standards
