Job Description

  • MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities:
  • General Objectives:
  • The Social Worker Supervisor is responsible for directly supervising and supporting the Social Workers who follow 40 – 80 cases each. 
  • The Supervisor will analyse, improve and ensure the quality of Social Work services of the MSF-project in Cairo through best-care practices in compliance with MSF procedures. 
  • The Supervisor will actively participate in the on-going development and implementation of the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) approach to patient care. 
  • The supervisor will comply with all administrative and management requirements and requests of the Project.
  • The supervisor will seek to expand and strengthen the social assistance services available for MSF patients (protection, housing, cash assistance, legal, employment) by creating and maintaining strong working relationships with partner organisations and striving for best outcome of patient referrals made to external service providers. 
  • Specific Accountabilities:
  • Directly supervise, and support Social Work clinicians:
  • Ensure complete understanding and implementation of MSF procedures by Social Worker (SW) staff through provision and review of updated materials, such as Social Work entry criteria, case closing criteria and departmental Standard Operational Procedures (SoPs) and utilisation of referral forms in order for MSF patients to access services provided by partner organisations.
  • Ensure the comprehensive induction and briefing of new social workers through timely adaption and creation of induction plans, briefing documents in addition to individually-tailored objective setting.
  • Orientate new clinicians representative of the medical and mental health departments by regularly delivering briefings to ensure accurate and timely patient referrals to the Social Work department.
  • Conduct weekly clinical individual and group supervision of SW staff in order to achieve quality patient interaction and maximum operational standards; providing one-to-one feedback and mentoring.
  • Training needs are identified by regularly observing the Social Workers in practice; trainings are planned and conducted.
  • Promote capacity building amongst the Social Workers through the delivery of regular and comprehensive feedback, appropriate task delegation and identification of training priorities.
  • Actively monitor emotional well-being and needs of SW staff, identifying signs of potential “burnout” or where workload could be more safely managed.
  • Ensure all Social Workers update and contribute to the patient File and complete all necessary Social Work assessment sheets; for the purpose of up-to-date MSF patient information and effective referrals and follow-up.
  • Ensure SW’s work complies with explicit and implicit requirements of the Project and is complete, accurate and timely.
  • Oversee a small caseload of especially complex cases, flagging complex cases to Field Coordinator / Project Medical Referent to ensure timely case discussions and higher-level advocacy.
  • Reporting and documentation
  • Act as a bridge between the Social Workers and Management team by active participation in clinic and inter-departmental meetings and to ensure careful transfer of accurate information between both parties. Highlight achievements and challenges in interdepartmental settings more generally.
  • Compile, analyze and ensure the complete and accurate completion of SW data; in addition, submit routine and as-requested SW data and information for use in Project and Mission reports.
  • Implement and submit all required Administrative & Human Resource documentation on time and accurately.
  • Participate in lessons learn analysis and tools adjustment.
  • Partnerships and networks
  • Participate actively in internal and external social actor meetings on a regular basis.
  • Mapping and regular update of social partners, local authorities, Community Base Organization - CBOs activities, Non-Governmental Organization - NGOs, and other social services in order to improve social services scope and responsiveness.
  • Liaise and be the focal point to partner organisations also engaged in the refugee response in Cairo (INGOs/NGOs) to ensure best outcome for MSF patients.
  • Seek to expand the network of external partners who can contribute to the Social Work package of care, services and referrals, in order to broaden the social assistance available for MSF patients.
  • Inform regularly the team/project about social activities and updated information about partners.
  • Teamwork (MDT)
  • Maintain close relationships with supervisors of other clinical departments and look for areas for close collaboration.

Job Requirements

Education

  • Degree in social work or social sciences. Social Work degree is highly desirable.

Experience

  • Experience with MSF or other NGOs is essential
  • Previous experience working in multicultural context is desirable
  • Experience in working within a multidisciplinary team
  • Previous experience in working with the refugee communities

Languages

  • Spoken Egyptian/Middle Eastern Arabic (not Maghreb countries).
  • Written and spoken English mandatory

Knowledge

  • Essential: knowledge of word, excel and internet
