Job Description
Science Lab Assistant Position Overview The science lab assistant will report to the principal and is under the direction of the school science teachers. The lab assistant performs a variety of tasks related to the support of chemistry, biology and physics labs in both middle school and secondary science classes. As a member of the educational team, the assistant must be vigilant in monitoring student safety and be prepared to address safety emergencies including coordinating with the appropriate person for the clean up of hazardous spills of materials.
Position Description
1. Coordinate with science teachers to ensure safe classroom environment
2. Set up equipment (assure all equipment is working), chemicals, and supplies for chemistry, physics, and biology labs at the elementary, middle school and secondary levels under the teacher’s guidance
3. The lab assistant is not expected to: Grade student work Fulfill clerical needs such as copying materials Collect copy jobs from the copy room
4. Assist the teacher during student lab activities, science fairs, and IBD Projects
5. The lab assistant is not expected to: Teach components of the lesson Assist the student(s) with completing the activity Assess the students
6. Upon completion of a lab activity, replace the items back into inventory and organizes the lab
7. Oversee the inventory of the lab equipment and chemical supplies including ordering and handling the required chemicals, gasses, and consumable items.
8. Maintain lab supply and equipment inventory spreadsheet for budget purposes 9. Priority is given first to required IB science level activities and projects, next priority is given to MS/HS general science classes, and then to the elementary science lab. Q
Job Requirements
- Qualifications Education:
- • B.S. Degree or higher Experience:
- • Minimum of 6 months experience in specific position or • 1 or 2 years related experience Technical Requirements:
- • Specific knowledge of laboratory equipment, chemical preparation, and disposal procedures
- • Basic computer knowledge including Word and Excel
- • Basic knowledge of classroom procedures Interpersonal Requirements:
- • Ability to work cohesively with a number of teachers within the science department to effectively organize work schedule
- • Ability to clearly communicate and understand instructions
- • Ability to supervise students under the direction of the teacher
- • Ability to work with minimal supervision • Patience and flexibility
