Action Against Hunger in Egypt are seeking for a consultant to undertake a KAP survey in Khosos.


Main objectives of the project are to:

  • Enhance performance of the primary health care facility in El Khosos;
  • To raise awareness of the local community on health, nutrition and diseases prevention;
  • To increase the quality and accessibility of the drinking water for the residents of Khosos.

1. Background

  • Action Against Hunger (AAH) Egypt has been implementing the project “Health Match Khosos”, funded by German Government and European Union, Cairo partnership with AOYE and Al Rahma.
  • Main objectives of the project are to enhance performance of the primary health care facility in El Khosos; to raise awareness of the local community on health, nutrition and diseases prevention; and to increase the quality and accessibility of the drinking water for the residents of Khosos. AAH aims to improve the health status and living conditions of the target population through activities such as health campaigns, infant and young child feeding sessions for pregnant and lactating women, capacity building and trainings to the health personal and installation of water stations in the selected public spaces.
  • Under this project, Action Against Hunger will conduct a KAP Survey to assess the knowledge and practises of the people in charge of the households regarding health and nutrition during pregnancy and the first 5 years of life, as well as the overall hygiene at household level, the impact of the heat, waste and water in their health and lifestyle.


2. Objective of the consultancy and scope of work

  • The study will aim, but not limited
  • Measure the level of knowledge of those in charge of children under five in terms of maternal and child health and nutrition related issues.
  • Determine the nutrition practices of children under five, the health of children and household hygiene in general.
  • Identify knowledge gaps, cultural beliefs or behavioral patterns and practices that create barriers to infant and young child feeding and care practices.
  • The KAP survey will generate strategy that will help promote positive behaviors that are appropriate to the setting and also to provide a supportive environment that will enable the community to initiate and sustain positive behaviors on maternal and child health and IYCF practices.
  • The KAP survey result must also include appropriate methodology for upcoming health campaigns for the community with the set of messages and recommended ways of delivery, including the main messages for informative brochures and posters that will be used during the health campaign.
  • The KAP expert will be working with a consultancy firm whose main responsibility are data collection (quantitative), and overseeing the volunteers during the data collection, and receiving the necessary permissions from the related authorities. The KAP expert still is the overall responsible for the quality of the data collection and volunteers.
  • The result of the KAP survey will be used as baseline to design activities to increase awareness and knowledge on identified gaps and needs to improve the health and nutrition outcomes of the target population.
  • The intending consultant will prepare a draft proposal on how they intend to conduct the survey. The consultant is expected to propose and design a suitable methodology for gathering information and delivering results

Specific Tasks of the consultant during the assessment:

  • Submit a report which will include an interpretation of the tasks and methodologies which will be used in the KAP study;
  • Develop appropriate tools and instruments for gathering information by using ODK.
  • Submit the prepared questions to the nutrition referent of the country for their approval.
  • Submit the approved questionnaire to the consultancy firm and conduct necessary meetings and coordination with the firm.
  • Present the KAP Methodology to the nutrition referent at HQ and the country team.
  • Conduct a desk review (nutrition Survey reports, DHIS Reports etc.) relevant to the survey;
  • Conduct KAP survey: Train data enumerators and ensure quality of data being collected on daily basis.
  • Undertake consultations with key stakeholders and conduct field data collection (i.e. focus group discussions and key informent interviews)
  • Process and analyse the data, write and submit a draft report of the survey;
  • Present Preliminary findings at the mission level.
  • Present the draft report of the findings in a stakeholder forum for comments and feedback
  • Revise and submit a final copy of the survey report including recommendations for the health campaigns and the mother support group trainins which include tailor based messages for the community.

Target Population:

  • Households with children under five and pregnant women.

Target Area:

  • Khosos, Qualbeya governorate.

Methodology:

  • The consultant is expected to propose and design a suitable methodology for gathering information and delivering results.

Calendar proposed to the consultant
The estimated starting date is between mid-June and beginning of July.
ACTIVITIES / NB weeks :

  • A detailed draft report showing how the consultant seeks to undertake the study. The report will include a clear methodology and data collection tools, analysis reporting details and a detailed work plan ( which will include desk review on the literature on IYCF and hygiene practices i.e. national health and nutrition surveys and academic literature

  • Training and organizing survey team; conduct pilot visits and communicate with the service provider who is responsible for collecting the data

  • Data collection

2 weeks

  • Treatment of data collected (data entry and analysis)

1 week.

  • Restitution & final report

1 week

  • Delivery of final report

August (exact date depending on starting date of contract)

TOTAL : 2.5 months

Payment condition:

  • The payment will be in EUR.
  • 40 % on the contract signature, and 60 % on the delivery of the final report after positive feedback of the technical department.
  • Original VAT Excluded Invoice.

Transport and accommodation:

  • Accommodation – The consultant will be responsible for her/his own accommodation. Action against Hunger (AAH) can make competitive and safe recommendations based on its experience in the area such as apartment hotel.
  • The consultant will receive a monthly allowance for daily meals, while working in the field which is considered sufficient according to the country living conditions.
  • Transport – The consultant will share AAH rented cars in the intervention area for working purposes as well as other transport mean (bus, train or plane) as long as these are to be used solely for working purposes.
  • The consultant is responsible for his/her own full health insurance.
  • The consultant will be responsible for entry visas when necessary.
  • The consultant is responsible for any international transportation as well as for accommodation in Madrid if needed.
  • The consultant is responsible for his/her own laptop.
  • Other – The consultant must follow the security/safety regulations in the mission as followed by the other expatriates.

    Job Requirements

    • Experience in Public Health, Nutrition and related fields
    • Experience to conduct KAP survey.
    • Good analytical skills
    • Good communication and diplomacy skills
    • Ability to deal with local partners
    • Fluent English language skills (report should be written in English) and minimum working knowledge of Arabic.
    • Experience with international NGOs
    • Experience in Middle Eastern context
