Job Description

Position Summary:

Proteinea is building a next-gen full-stack bioengineering and bio-manufacturing platforms. We aim to utilize our protein engineering and production platforms to bridge the gap between development and scaled up production. Proteins are our focus; they are the core of some of the world’s most important fields such as pharmaceuticals, food, and industrial processing. Our long-term goals are to be a one-stop shop for bio-innovation, using our technology to solve problems and tackle important challenges and threats in several fields. Our A.I/Deep learning powered protein engineering platform allows us to create superior synthetic proteins that can be optimized for our purposes. With the platform we can generate completely new proteins or optimize existing ones, we can create and optimize drugs for human and animal health, proteins for water desalination, land reclamation, and many further uses. We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced, Lab and facility operation specialist who is familiar with the atmosphere and challenges of a new startup and a new facility. We’re looking for a humble team player who is willing to help with priorities across the growing organization as assigned.   

What you'll be doing at Proteinea:

  • Manage all general laboratory operations including lab maintenance, tissue culture room maintenance, hazardous waste disposal, etc. 
  • Oversee day-to-day procurement and inventory management, working closely with employees across the company to ensure accurate ordering processes.
  • Order laboratory consumables, office supplies & services, and negotiate the best prices for supplies; address any issues with orders; manage shipping/receiving. 
  • Manage laboratory instrumentation/equipment including servicing, repair, validation and calibration.
  • Ensuring that health and safety policies are followed and appropriate risk assessments are undertaken. 
  • Review research protocols of internal and external research groups in an effort to stay abreast as to what research projects are occurring in the laboratory at any given time. 
  • Participate in laboratory meetings and generate ideas for improving efficiency and productivity in the laboratory operations.
  • Act as main local liaison with vendors and estates. 
  • Assist with budgeting, acquisition and installation of capital lab instrumentation.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment including but not limited to documentation and coordinating with service vendors (glassware washer, autoclaves, bioreactors, analytical equipment, air compressors, vacuum systems, etc.).
  • Manage shipping/receiving and general lab services.

Job Requirements

  • 5+ years of lab management experience with biotech experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience managing biology equipment and vendors.
  • Experience with facilities management.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, and the ability to work on multiple projects at the same time.
  • Bachelor's degree required in Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Virology, Immunology or related fields. We are also ok with operations experience instead.
  • Valid recognized qualifications in laboratory safety e.g. hazardous materials, is a great plus.
  • Experience with molecular biology and cell culture techniques. 
  • Ability to work efficiently, both independently and as part of a team. 
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills together with a positive attitude. 
  • Good understanding of facilities management issues and procurement procedures. 
  • Ability to work on own initiative and to prioritize work for self and for teams. 
  • Ability to deal diplomatically but firmly with difficult situations. 
  • Ability to work autonomously.
