Teaching Assistant Job Description
Job purpose: Foster effective teaching, learning, and management of resources and be a model of professional practice in the PYP classroom.
As a Teaching Assistant , you will:
Manage learning :
- Show commitment to students and their learning.
- Ensure that the children experience a broad, balanced, relevant and stimulating learning experience.
- Motivate and stimulate the children's learning abilities, encouraging learning through hands on activities.
- Assist with applying differentiation in class.
- Promote the development of children’s basic skills including physical coordination, speech and communication, personal, social and language abilities.
- Encourage inquiry learning and concept-based instruction.
- Assist with ensuring that all marking, assessments, other evidence and recording of student's work are kept up to date and according to IBO and GEMS requirements.
- Ensure the safety and welfare of the students and resources in your care.
- Ensure that school policies are reflected in daily practice and promote the ethos of the school.
- Always communicate with children in English.Identify students’ needs and cater for them.
Professional management of self, planning and reflection:
- Work, support, liaise and plan as necessary, with staff, teachers and with the PYP Coordinator which includes collaborative planning and reflection, level weekly planning, PYP/Whole School meeting, committee meeting, etc.
- Attend training and development sessions
- Collaborate with the academic coordinator and teachers in planning both vertically and horizontally.
- Assist in planning and coordinating learning activities both indoors and outdoors with appropriate challenges and high expectations, and to develop children's curiosity and knowledge.
- Assist in planning opportunities to develop the social, emotional, and cultural aspects of children’s learning.
- Always implement IB and GEMS school policies.
- Show respect and a positive attitude in dealing with students, parents, and colleagues.
Professional development:
- Participate in sharing sessions, in-school training, and conferences.
- Keep up to date with education and school developments.
Resources and environment:
- Assist with providing a stimulating and challenging classroom environment with displays that reflect the students’ learning.
- Assist with developing additional resources to supplement classroom materials to improve instruction and for differentiation.
- Organize and manage groups or individual students, ensuring differentiation of learning needs and reflecting all abilities.
- Promote a collaborative reflective class culture.
- Maintain good class order among students.
- Arrange for resources, equipment, and materials to be available in such a way that they are properly cared for, easily accessible, and will encourage the children to become more responsible for their own learning.
- Maintain a high standard of display work and working walls both in the classroom and in other areas of the school.
Pastoral Care:
- Be responsible for the supervision of the students (before class – AM/PM duty roster, during class hours, at break time and lunch times - lunch duty roster) and carry out any other duties as agreed with the Class Teacher and Coordinator.
- Promote the welfare of children and support the school in safeguarding children through relevant policies and procedures.
- Celebrate PYP students' achievements through assemblies and class celebrations.
- Promote the IB PYP Attitudes and Profile Attributes.
- Respond to students’ physical, mental, and emotional needs in school.
Whole School:
- Participate in PYP and whole school meetings.
- Contribute and encourage a positive atmosphere in school.
- Organize and take part in school events, outings and extracurricular activities which may take place at weekends or in the evening.
Job Requirements
- University Degree: Faculty of Arts- English Language and Literature or Arts and Sciences
- English Proficiency: Very good -Excellent
- IB experience: preferable but not essential
- Years of experience: Minimum of 3 years as a TA in an international school setting
- Up to date technology skills
- Individual exceptional skills or qualifications (SEN, world languages, art, music) are a plus
- Aspiration to work in a world class school with real prospects for enhancing their career.
