Job Description
Idea in Motion (IIM) is seeking a creative, highly-energetic leader to join us as Head of R&D. You will have complete responsibility for product development and lead the multi-disciplined development department whilst also contributing to business development on a strategic level.
Currently, our highly-diverse multi-team R&D department develops complex products spanning technologies such as electronic hardware design, embedded software, computing hardware, highly-scalable server-based/cloud-hosted backend systems, machine vision, artificial intelligence and machine learning. We are currently active in several markets, including, embedded software, automotive technologies, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), Traveller/Passenger Information systems, e-Commerce and banking and financial technology.
Our products and technologies are used by some of the largest companies in the world in their respective markets/fields.
We are looking for a blend of personal technical excellence, multi-disciplined engineering leadership talent and well-developed people skills.
What we need from you
Responsibilities
- Management and development of a talented, multi-functional R&D department (currently includes 50 employees and growing).
- Coaching and mentoring the R&D team leaders
- Delivery of products and projects satisfying the committed performance, quality, cost and schedule targets.
- Provide technical leadership in all aspects of the product design.
- Develop technical aspects of the company’s strategy to ensure alignment with its business goals and future orientation.
- Scout, implement and onboard new technologies according to the approved technology roadmap in order to sustain IIM’s competitive advantage
- Closely cooperate with the Operations department to define development plans, resources, schedules, milestones and budgets and to make critical technical decisions and contingency plans.
- Build, manage and ensure compliance to quality-assured industry-recognized best practice processes for R&D and product development.
- Interface with partners, customers, suppliers and other functional teams within IIM such as Product & Category Management.
- Budget (projects and cost center) planning & management.
- Oversee the development and management of tooling in support of design, infrastructure and technology platforms
- Supervise technology infrastructure to ensure proper functionality and efficiency
- Monitor KPIs and IT budgets to assess technological performance
- Engage stakeholders for requirements and specifications analysis and solution development, and use the feedback to inform necessary improvements
- Communicate technology strategy to partners, customers and stakeholders
- Travel domestically and internationally when required
Job Requirements
- Minimum of 10+ years of software development experience
- Expert knowledge of S/W algorithms and data structures
- You will be a senior ‘hands-on’ engineer or scientist with a graduate degree in engineering plus a strong executive presence and highly effective communication skills.
- A broad knowledge and interest in the fundamentals of product and system architecture.
- Experience in managing development departments of similar or larger size.
- Well-versed in R&D process management
- Familiar with artificial intelligence, machine learning and scalable backend technology fundamentals
- A hands-on, entrepreneurial approach with a strong work ethic and perseverance.
- An ability to articulate a vision, to translate complexity into easy-to-understand terms and to keep others informed of your progress against commitments.
- You will need to have the intellectual curiosity and mental energy to keep pace with the constant stream of technical developments in relevant fields.
- Customer-centric prioritization and data-driven decision making
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Occasional world-wide travel will be necessary.
Nice to have:
- Prior experience working in the mission-critical backend systems
- Prior experience in agile environments
- MBA would be a plus
- German language skills
