Job Description

Purpose

The librarian facilitates and supports inquiry-based learning with and through:

  • Stand-alone services and instruction
  • Library materials and resources
  • Support of classroom units of inquiry

General Responsibilities

  • Create and develop policies that govern library use in coordination with other stakeholders
  • Implement the 6+1 framework on library systems (see Ideal libraries: A Guide for Schools, IBO, 2018) that promotes inquiry, including:
    • Curating
    • Caretaking
    • Catalyzing
    • Connecting
    • Co-creating
    • Challenging
    • Catering
  • Promote international-mindedness, multilingualism, multi modality, and multiliteracies through the library collections, services, and through the facilitation of workshops and classes as needed
  • Engage students and staff members in the development of library goals and targets
  • Ensure that all library materials, equipment, and facilities are properly used by all parties
  • Develop and maintain library resources
  • Regularly review library purchases to meet learners and teachers needs
  • Plan and manage the resourcing of the library to meet teaching goals
  • Contribute to the school’s resource allocation decisions
  • Develop, promote, and manage Book Week, and book fairs
  • Develop, promote, and manage library use during breaks, lunch, and after school including literacy and various support groups
  • Create a safe and inclusive physical and emotional environment in the library
  • Communicate with students and parents positively and effectively according to the school policies and expectations
  • Ensure that all materials are cataloged expertly and that the catalog is updated daily with returns and check-outs of materials
  • Conduct regular library inventory
  • Develop and lead staff development with regards to library use, support, and programmes
  • Build relationships with government and university libraries in Egypt in order to provide further means to facilitate inquiry.
  • Be involved in supporting and developing Units of Inquiry in the Primary Years through collaboration
  • Teach classes on academic honesty, in line with the Academic Honesty Policy, as appropriate
  • Have assigned out-loud reading times with students
  • Promote the appropriate use of IT in keeping with the school’s Technology and Acceptable Use Policy

Professionalism

All staff are expected to demonstrate professionalism by following the guidelines in the UIS Code of Conduct, which is signed annually by each staff member, the Policy manual, and the employment contract. The standards in these documents include, but are not limited to:

  • Embody, model, and promote the IB Learner Profile attributes
  • Uphold the professional standards of UIS in work and in community relationships
  • Observe confidentiality regarding all matters relating to employment with the UIS both within the school, as appropriate, and outside of the school
  • Uphold all UIS policies and procedures
  • Contribute to the development of whole school strategic planning
  • Publicly support the school and neither organising nor participating in any activities that could bring the reputation of UIS into disrepute
  • Communicate effectively and appropriately with the school community, both orally and in writing in line with the school’s Style Guide
  • Collaborate with colleagues and attending required meetings
  • Respond to communications in a timely manner
  • Maintain open and consistent channels of communication with parents regarding student progress
  • Meet deadlines and keeping records
  • Participate in school events such as parent conferences and professional training that may occur outside of normal working hours

Job Requirements

Required:

  • For Egyptian nationals, a teaching or library qualification issued or recognized by the Ministry of Education
  • A degree from an accredited university
  • B2 level of English or higher

Preferred:

  • IB Primary Years Program (PYP) teaching and/or library experience
  • Work experience in an accredited, international curriculum school
  • International curriculum teaching experience outside Egypt
  • Excellent command of Arabic language
  • Non-smoker
  • Experience working with Follett Destiny
