Job Description

The Head of Primary serves as the pedagogical leader of the Primary. In this role, he/she supervises the curriculum and staff, ensures and manages the implementation of school policies and procedures, and affirms compliance with International Baccalaureate, government, and other relevant agencies. The Head of Primary adheres to the Staff Code of Conduct and other professional, contractual obligations.

The following are the responsibilities of the Head of Primary:

Pedagogical Leadership

  • Support and implement the mission, vision, and values of UIS
  • Model the IB Learner Profile attributes to staff, students, and families
  • Lead and develop approaches to teaching and learning that are aligned with IB standards and practices
  • Prepare all appropriate and required documentation for authorizations and accreditations
  • Make recommendations regarding the professional development of staff
  • Promote staff collaboration in support of the curriculum
  • Professionally develop staff and ensure the use of school management systems and teaching and learning tools
  • Monitor and evaluate student academic progress and behavior in order to support teaching and learning
  • Acknowledge and celebrate successful teaching practice
  • Assist in the development of appropriate educational experiences such as guest speakers and excursions to support curriculum
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the school’s pastoral education program

Policies and Procedures

  • Contribute to the development of school policy and procedures
  • Educate staff and stakeholders regarding school policy, procedures
  • Ensure implementation of and alignment to the school’s policy and procedures with special emphasis on the following:
  • Admissions
  • Language
  • Inclusion
  • Assessment
  • Academic Honesty
  • Child Protection and Safeguarding

Communications

  • Work with students, parents, and staff regarding any teaching and learning concerns, including establishing and participating in meetings between various individuals and groups
  • Observe, meet, and mentor staff in order to improve teaching and learning as part of staff evaluation
  • Keep all correspondence and other documentation organized, confidential, and up-to-date
  • Maintain appropriate communication including newsletters, blog entries, social media updates with the wider community
  • Make presentations to staff, students, and parents regarding the school’s programmes
  • Lead student, parent, and staff information sessions
  • Actively participate in the Parent-Teacher Association
  • Collaborate with teachers and leadership to ensure appropriate and timely ordering of school materials

Management and Additional Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Director, the Head of Secondary, and IB programme coordinators regarding teaching and learning, curriculum implementation, timetabling, and classroom use and assignments
  • Ensure the creation and maintenance of accurate documentation of all processes relating to the management of the division including, but not limited to:
  • Written curriculum
  • Term reports for all students
  • Behavioral records
  • Staff evaluation
  • Master timetable
  • Meeting agendas and minutes
  • Permanent student records
  • Attendance
  • Participate in interviewing potential school staff as well as placement of staff for effective teaching and learning
  • Create and implement a staff orientation program
  • Manage, appraise, and evaluate staff
  • Create and enforce duty schedules
  • Supervise, lead, and assign committee work to support the school’s development
  • Serve as Acting Director during the absence of the Dir

Job Requirements

The Head of Primary must have:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Primary Education or equivalent, or a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership
  • At least five years of Primary teaching experience
  • School leadership experience preferably in an IB Primary Years Program
  • Teaching/leadership experience outside their home country

Preference is given to candidates who have:

  • Served in the IB Educator Network, especially as an official IB workshop leader
  • Taught IB PYP during their career
  • Served as an IB PYP Coordinator
  • Completed Child Protection and Safeguarding training
  • Participated in recent professional development
