Job Description

JOB PURPOSE :

The Local Medical Expert reports to the Saudi Country Medical Director and is responsible for providing high-value therapy area expertise to the internal organization; leading external communications and engagement designed to educate, gain external expert insight and scientific advocacy in accordance with the code of practice, guidelines and local regulations. To create value through generation, interpretation and communication of medical and scientific information and creative scientific ideas converted into marketing practices offering competitive advantage to the company.

  • To lead compliant engagement with the healthcare professionals including key external experts, regulators and governmental agencies as well as payers and other policy makers in order to ensure high-quality scientific dialogue in line with our vision to be the preferred and trusted medical partner for better health outcomes.
  • To inspire and bring insight to the organization by having an in-depth knowledge of the science and evidence for GSK medicines, devices and other treatment options within their therapy area expertise
  • Co-lead with external partners the creation of a new and sustainable medical educational model.
  • Interacts with a variety of divisional and/or corporate departments such as marketing and sales, legal affairs, regulatory affairs as well as communication, External co-operation with relevant national advisory boards, peer groups, industry associations and customers (health care providers, etc.) is required

ACCOUNTABILITIES :

  • Partner with the LOC management and team to deliver business support primarily for innovative respiratory portfolio with some support the classic and established respiratory portfolio
  • Present at and participate in standalones, sponsored and collaborative meetings and congresses in Saudi and potentially other countries in the region (as may be required) ensuring compliance with the strictest codes of practice, guidelines and laws pertaining in the relevant country.
  • Engage with the key HCPs including external experts as well as medical societies and universities that have a role in healthcare policy, guidelines or education, to co-lead the field of medical education and provide high value scientific insight and understanding of GSK medicines, devices and treatments within area of expertise.
  • Engage with OHS such as policy makers, payers government officials, reimbursement and supranational bodies in collaboration with Government Affairs team to understand their needs regarding our products, to contribute to public health planning and to respond to specific requests for information such as pre-authorization data that is not available in the public domain.
  • Provide factual, balanced and scientifically rigorous medical and safety information regarding disease areas of mutual interest, GSK products in development, or new indications for authorized products in accordance with the code of practice, guidelines and local regulations
  • Provide strategic medical input to medical plans development and commercialization plans, global medical affairs and integrated evidence plans, clinical trial programs and research studies.
  • Support identification of and relationship building with new and existing clinical study investigators as well key and rising external experts in the therapy area.
  • Support the Scientific Engagement Strategy by integrating strategic input in the external and internal medical communications plan
  • Work closely with the LoC medical leadership to ensure that all external facing Respiratory Medical Affairs roles are aligned with the medical communications strategy and to enhance proficiency of the team in the Therapy Area as per the Medical Competency Framework (MCF) to further enhance team medical capabilities. Furthermore, act as an internal expert resource that can provide advice to cross functional teams including LT and support the medical team in delivery of the internal training programs to enhance commercial teams’ scientific capabilities.
  • Fully understand and always meet the requirements in the GSK Standards for Scientific Engagement, External Interactions by Medical and R&D Staff and, where relevant to promotional activities, the GSK Code of Practice for Promotion and Customer Interactions as well as the local codes of practice, guidelines and laws to ensure the strictest requirements are met particularly with respect to delivery of promotional and non-promotional engagements.

Job Requirements

Senior Physician with substantial clinical experience in managing patients with Asthma / allergy / COPD recognized by peers and other HCPs at national/ regional level as a key expert. Having an extensive publications record in peer-reviewed/ international medical journals in the relevant therapy area

Impactful presentation / communication skills along with strong negotiation skills

  • PhD or equivalent / consultant level Respiratory Physician
  • Academic chair/Professor/department-leading scientist or healthcare professional in Respiratory
  • A main author in a number of thought leadership publications or a leading healthcare professional in a therapy area who has delivered leading presentations at national or international congresses
  • Membership of national/ international organizations

The medical/ clinical expertise required for this role will be applied to provide insight in medical/ commercial planning internally as well as provide advice on the positioning of portfolio assets, patient profiling, HCP insights so that our respiratory products can reach the right patients. Internally it will also help identify medical education and clinical practice gaps so that unmet medical needs can be properly addressed.

Externally the medical and clinical knowledge will support communicating highly credible messages to our HCPs on peer to peer level of scientific exchanges and establish GSK as a leader in scientific debate related to our Products and disease areas, as well as enhance our capabilities to handle HCPs clinical questions and concerns and handle objections related to our evidence from clinical perspective also.

Advanced skills to handle a range of complex relationships/issues/multiple projects simultaneously

Proven influential skills and strong presentation skills to senior HCP audiences at national and/or international level

Strong interpersonal and networking skills with ability to build and maintain relationships at all levels of GSK and external stakeholders

Understanding of the local healthcare system, its relevant processes and regulations as well as political and economic environment – experience in/knowledge of pharmaceutical industry.

Good command of spoken & written English with strong local culture awareness highly desirable.

Strong personal network and seen as highly respected figure within community of top external respiratory experts, societies, institutions and across the medical community in respiratory TA.

Robust knowledge of respiratory disease, healthcare environment and/or medical practice and Develops insights that deepen our understanding of the needs of patients, prescribers, consumers, regulators and payers

Robust knowledge of healthcare & payer environment, public health priorities & the regulatory framework

Robust knowledge of external environment and competitor pipelines/ portfolios and ability to use knowledge to weigh up challenges and risks to GSK; devises strategies to augment and complement the GSK future portfolio.
