Job Description

The ICRC is a neutral, impartial and independent organization, which has been working in Egypt since the beginning of the second world war. Its exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of war and internal violence and to provide them with assistance. The ICRC endeavors to alleviate suffering by promoting and strengthening International Humanitarian Law and universal humanitarian principles.

The ICRC’s Regional Communication Center in Cairo:

The Cairo-based regional communication support centre runs the ICRC Arabic website (www.icrc.org/ara), as well as ICRC social media platforms in Arabic, such as Twitter and Facebook. The centre is ICRC’s main producer of Arabic-language publications and films, including its quarterly magazine “Al Insani”, which highlights contemporary humanitarian challenges in the Middle East. The regional communication support centre promotes ICRC’s activities and humanitarian concerns among pan-Arab media and regularly organizes workshops on humanitarian topics for senior editors and journalists from the region. The centre supports the communication efforts of ICRC delegations in Arabic-speaking countries, aiming at strengthening acceptance of the ICRC as an impartial, neutral and independent humanitarian organization, and facilitating access to people affected by armed conflict or other situations of violence.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direct supervision of the ICRC Cairo Deputy head of RCC, the Media Analyst will:

  • S/he identifies, collects, monitors, tracks, synthesizes and analyses relevant public information, and conversations primarily in relation to the humanitarian situation, the ICRC’s working environment, the organization’s visibility, perception, and reputation; with the ability to compare it to benchmark organizations in both traditional and social Arab media;
  • S/he identifies at an early stage humanitarian risks, issues and trends that might have an impact on the ICRC’s operations, acceptance and reputation;
  • The media analyst carries out in-depth research into pan-Arabic sources of information, contributes to the data extraction ensuring accuracy and performing quality checks;
  • S/he contributes to building and developing the media analysis capacity of colleagues in Arabic-speaking countries; and actively provides advice, feedback...
  • S/he carries out various data entry and analysis tasks including social networks analysis;
  • S/he creates high quality, actionable analysis/reports on a recurring and ad hoc basis based on data, to enable evidence-based decision-making or use of data in daily activities;
  • S/he responds to ad hoc thematic requests with in-depth research on specialized sources and tailor-made reports.
  • S/he formulates recommendations to mitigate risks and seize opportunities regarding media and digital relations.
  • S/he explores and tests new data sources and analytical techniques.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • University degree in communication, political science, information sciences, social sciences, international relations or any other relevant field;
  • Minimum six years of professional experience in a similar function, notably media monitoring and data analysis;
  • Egyptian national or resident holding a work permit in Egypt;
  • Excellent written and spoken Arabic skills; fluent in written and spoken English;
  • Very good communicator, excellent analytical and writing skills;
  • Excellent knowledge of Middle East region, the media and social media landscape including monitoring tools..

Desirable Assets:

  • Strongly motivated by humanitarian work.
  • Experience in working with a wide range of people from culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience with a humanitarian organization an asset
  • French Language is an asset
  • Data visualization skills (e.g. using Tableau) and experience in data analysis and statistical methods, including social network analysis (e.g Gephi) being strong assets.
