Role synopsis
The SIM (Subsurface & Wells Information Management) Specialist provides technical Information Management and Data Analytical support to Africa subsurface and wells teams. They work with the SIM Lead to deliver operational support and project delivery within the region and with the Region SIM Data Domain Tags supporting the delivery of the SIM Global Strategy.
The SIM specialist is a technical role for those who have a passion for data and a passion to unlock and use data to inform better business decisions.
Key Accountabilities
IMPROVEMENT OF INFORMATION AND MANAGEMENT OF DATA
- Actively seeking to improve information & data quality, standards and completeness
- Consistently striving to automate and simplify workflows and processes
- Generating and championing ideas to improve SIM processes, workflows, best practices and service delivery
- Creating innovative solutions for local, regional and global SIM challenges
- Actively seeking to apply data science techniques; automation and machine learning, including the use of analytical and visualisation tools to translate data and interpreted results into actionable insights and value
- Liaison with the Data Science Global Domain to explore and understand the use of the data science workflow in existing practices and identifying new opportunities to develop and scale solutions aligned to the Domain plan
EFFICIENT OPERATIONAL SUPPORT FOR SUBSURFACE, GWO AND REGIONAL TEAMS
- Providing specialist support in one or more specific data domains or areas of expertise (i.e. Exploration, Geophysics, Geology, Geospatial, Reservoir, Production, Data Science, Physical Data, Documents, Information and Knowledge Management etc.)
- Providing information & data management and technical workflow support to business teams or a region using core subsurface and mapping applications
- Capturing knowledge and expertly managing the business workflow products
- Loading, managing and providing quality control for subsurface, upstream structured and unstructured data types to project and master data stores and within third party technical applications
- Creating high quality workflow products for a team or region, such as maps, cross-sections, technical documents, presentations, reports etc.
- Reformatting digital data using scripting and tools
- Analysing, modelling or mapping subsurface or upstream data using technical applications, analytical tools and technologies
- Facilitating the transfer and management of physical and digital data with third parties, partners, contractors and regulatory authorities
- Actively using analytical tools and technologies e.g. Spotfire, Excel, Matlab, Python, SQL, R, Relational databases etc., and identifying opportunities for their use
BETTER ACCESS TO TRUSTED INFORMATION AND DATA
- Performing data clean-up and improvement initiatives within master and project databases and on network folders
- Systematically capturing knowledge and recording accurate metadata information within project or master databases
- Managing user access to data stores and repositories
- Rigorously applying industry and data management principles and fundamentals
- Ensuring key information is captured when data is archived
PROCESS AND STANDARDS
- Ensuring that SIM Global data processes, standards & workflows are followed
- Complying with information and records management standards and procedures
- Ensuring that data processes, standards & workflows are accurately documented

Job Requirements
Essential Education
- Degree in relevant field and/or a reasonable level of experience working with data within the Upstream Oil & Gas industry
Essential experience and job requirements
- In supporting the Africa region, the following elements of domain knowledge, understanding and experience shall be evident: Geology/Wells
- Management of well log data throughout its lifecycle, including Real-Time, MWD / LWD and Wireline data types, image logs, reports and petrophysical interpretation (including environmental corrections, despiking, joining etc.) and master and project storage and end-user usage requirements
- New Well Common Process for one or more BP Operated wells, from pre-appraise to operate; have the capability to manage the applicable data types at all stages
- Using data management and end-user applications/scripting and their data stores containing geological and wells data including Petrel, Studio Manager, Techlog, Recall/Dropsite, SharePoint, EDM, Compass, OpenWells, Spotfire, PowerBI, Python, to perform data loading, export, QC/QA, editing, visualisation and analysis etc.
- Management of core data throughout its lifecycle, including samples, RCA, SCAL, core images, reports and interpretation, and master and project storage and end-user usage requirements
- Geological and Wells-related data types and understand their standards, quality and integration requirements within and between Global Wells (GWO), Reservoir Development (RD), Exploration and Upstream Technology (UT)
Geophysics
- Utilising the seismic data toolkit for Subsurface using corporate standard tools/applications to maintain consistency and efficiency.
- Checking that seismic data has been loaded and administered accurately when done by 3rd party service providers.
