Job Description

OBJECTIVES

  • The Media and Press Relations Officer will develop a strong network of national, regional and international journalists based in Cairo and increase the visibility of MSF’s humanitarian principles and action.
  • In addition to providing communications support and advice to MSF teams managing operations in Egypt and the region.
  • The Media and Press Relations Officer will also work on supporting MSF’s institutional communications initiatives especially MSF’s international field recruitment activities from Egypt as well as contribute to MSF’s global awareness, acceptance and visibility.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide operational communications support to the Egypt mission

  • Ensure adequate monitoring of media reporting on humanitarian, medical and migration related issues and MSF;
  • In collaboration with the MSF Egypt Head of Mission, support in the development of appropriate communications strategies, initiatives and tools (leaflets, press releases, campaigns etc) that are adapted to the needs of the Egypt mission;
  • Support with the data collection for the Egypt section in the International Activity Report.

Push MSF’s regional and international communication initiatives in Egypt

  • Serve as the media focal point in Egypt.
  • Develop a network of local, regional and international journalists based in Cairo reporting on humanitarian issues;
  • Closely monitor media in their reporting on issues relevant to MSF projects, produce regular analysis out of such reporting and timely flagging of communications opportunities and risks for operations in the region that may require support
  • Coordinate with regional field communication staff to ensure coherence, efficiency and impact of communication initiative in the region
  • Profile MSF’s work, projects, and concerns on humanitarian crises in the region among regional and international media.
  • Identify and advise on themes/situations on which MSF should consider positioning itself publicly; support the development of dissemination strategies, messages and tools to ensure these positioning.

Work with MSF communication resources in the region to raise the organizations visibility, acceptance, and leverage in the MENA

  • In support to the on-going work of other communication staff in the region, contribute to the development of a strategic network of local, regional and international journalists based in MENA countries, reporting on humanitarian issues;
  • In coordination with existing regional MSF communication staff in Lebanon, Dubai, and Amman contribute to the media monitoring of Arab media and social media in order to identify risks and to advise on opportunities and relevant dissemination activities for getting MSF communications covered by national and regional media;
  • Facilitate journalists’ field visits to MSF projects and pitch key issues / projects to journalists;
  • Coach MSF spokespeople and provide media training for any field staff dealing with the media in the region;
  • Be available to act as emergency press officer and crisis info focal point during emergencies/crisis/incident in the region and facilitate journalists’ field visits to MSF projects in the region;
  • Develop relationships with networks of creative agencies, film makers, photographers, production companies and printing houses to support MSF's multi-media efforts in the region.
  • Develop communications strategies that would support MSF’s international field recruitment efforts from Egypt;
  • Produce written content featuring MSF and its staff in Arabic and English;
  • Provide a communications briefing to MSF’s Egyptian international staff ahead of their travels and ensure that they are debriefed upon their return;
  • Profile Egyptian international staff working with MSF and ensuring that they get covered in Egyptian media;
  • Take the lead on organizing events, printing material, and liaising with external suppliers and consultants.

Job Requirements

Essential

  • Previous working experience of at least 3 years in communications, journalism or public relations;
  • Previous working experience in media management, coordinating communication strategies notably at time of emergencies/crisis and content production;
  • Excellent knowledge of Arabic and international media networks in Cairo
  • Experience with MSF or other international NGOs;
  • Key experience and interest in the MENA region and in humanitarian related matters;
  • Digital and social media skills;
  • Fluency in Arabic and English (both spoken and written);
  • Excellent writing and communication skills;
  • Knowledge of humanitarian work;
  • Understanding of the importance of community acceptance and perception;
  • Ability to work independently and report relevant information clearly and concisely;
  • Excellent management and communication skills, outgoing personality, good representation;
  • Excellent personal organizational ability;
  • Flexibility to travel.

Desirable

  • Fluency in French is an asset;
  • Previous experience in the humanitarian and/or associative sector;
  • Photo and video production skills are a major plus.
