Action Against Hunger in Egypt is seeking a consultant to undertake a End Line KAP survey in Khosos.

1. Background

Action Against Hunger Egypt has been implementing the project “Health Match Khosos”, funded by GIZ, Cairo partnership with AOYE and Al Rahma. Main objectives of the project are to enhance performance of the primary health care facility in El Khosos; to raise awareness of the local community on health, nutrition and diseases prevention; and to increase the quality and accessibility of the drinking water for the residents of Khosos. Through these activities, ACF aims to improve the health status and living conditions of the target population through activities such as health campaigns, infant and young child feeding sessions for pregnant and lactating women, capacity building and training to the health personal and installation of water stations in the selected public spaces.

Under this project, Action Against Hunger will conduct an end line KAP Survey (IYCF) to compliment the baseline survey previously done. We are looking for a consultant who has at least 3 years’ experience in nutrition and health programming and interventions, and had prior experience in conducting similar nutrition and health surveys and studies.

This study will assess the current common IYCF practice especially now that the project has been fully implemented. It will identify the remaining major barrier for acceptable child feeding and care practices. The findings of the assessment will be used by the project team and primary health care staff to advocate for positive change in behaviour following the health campaigns and other project activities. It will also be used as a means of measuring the impact of our project.

2. Objective of the consultancy and scope of work

The study will aim, but not limited to :

  • Measure the level of knowledge of those in charge of children under five in terms of maternal and child health and nutrition related issues.
  • Determine the nutrition practices of children under five, the health of children and household hygiene in general.
  • Identify knowledge gaps, cultural beliefs or behavioral patterns, practices and any other socio-cultural and economic factors that may facilitate understanding and action or create barriers to infant and young child feeding.
  • Thoughts on the maternal health services in the primary health center in the target area.
  • Sources of messages/information (about Maternal and Child Health in the community.)
  • Preferred means of communication utilized to access information related to Maternal and Child Health
  • Knowledge on infant and young child feeding practices (IYCF) at the community level.
  • Community attitudes, behavior and belief on key optimum IYCF practices
  • Knowledge on key health / hygiene messages& practices j) Knowledge on hand washing and food hygiene and knowledge on public health problems in the area.

All the above should be addressed from a point of assessment rather than identification of the current situation so that any changes in the Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices of the beneficiaries is detected.

The KAP survey will help us identify areas of strength and weakness in implementing our project. It will also highlight areas resistant to change or requiring a higher level of intervention. It will serve as a tool to validate the findings of the baseline KAP and to prove whether the methodology and the messages previously set were accurate enough.

The consultant will prepare a draft proposal on how they intend to conduct the survey. They are expected to propose and design suitable methodology for gathering information and delivering results. This is a social study and both qualitative and quantitative data should be generated.

Specific Tasks of the consultant during the assessment :

  • A detailed report showing how the consultant seeks to undertake the study. The report will include a clear methodology and data collection tools, analysis reporting details and a detailed work plan (which will include desk review on the literature on IYCF and hygiene practices i.e. national health and nutrition surveys and academic literature).
  • Develop appropriate tools and instruments for gathering information using ODK.
  • Communicate and coordinate with the project manager and supervise the volunteers during the data analysis and entry stages.
  • Train data enumerators and ensure data being collected on daily basis is of optimum quality.
  • Undertake consultations with key stakeholders and conduct field data collection (i.e. focus group discussions and key informent interviews)
  • Process and analyse the data, write and submit a draft report of the survey;
  • Present Preliminary findings to the mission and its partners.

Revise and submit a final copy of the survey report including recommendations for future similar projects including a review of the tailored messages previously drafted for addressing the community.

  • Nutritionist, Nurse or Medical Doctor with experience in public health, nutrition and related fields
  • Experience to conduct IYCF KAP survey.
  • Good analytical skills
  • Good communication and diplomacy skills
  • Ability to deal with local partners
  • Fluent English language skills (report should be written in English) and minimum working knowledge of Arabic.
  • Experience with international NGOs
  • Experience in Middle Eastern context
  • CLOSING DATE 12 April 2018
