Job Description
The OSP splicer Technician is responsible for the Operation & Maintenance (Preventive/Testing/Corrective/Reallocate…..) and stability of the OSP cables.
- Prepping and fusion or mechanical splice SM and occasionally MM fiber optic cables.
- Knowledge and hand-on experience in all kinds of OSP cables such as (long distance direct buried cables, long distance ducted route cables, Metro routes, Aerial cables)
- Demonstrated understanding of fiber counts and colors.
- Good hands-on experience in doing civil & FOC PMR.
- Places and test jumpers in communication cabinets
- Able to place a mid-sheath splice
- Work with Construction PM's and/or OSP Engineers to perform splicing as directed
- Testing and troubleshooting fiber using an OTDR, optical power meter, fiber identifier and scope and VFL.
- Provide the OSP Engineers with detailed reports of field splicing activity
- Work flexible hours, after hours work which would include nights and weekends
- Strong communication skills are absolutely essential as is a cooperative attitude toward coworkers and third party vendors
- Maintain a positive attitude and strong work ethic that can provide high productivity with minimal supervision.
- On call rotation responding and restoring services for emergency calls, responsible for being on the job at short notice to repair damaged cables until service is restored.
- Perform all work as necessary to conform to quality control guidelines (includes compliance with requirements outlined in applicable regulations such as: OSHA, FCC,etc ; as well as following procedures as outlined in the Installation, Technical, Operations, and Safety Manuals, and Employee Handbook)
- Clean, maintain, stock, and secure equipment
- Perform other duties as requested by supervisor
- Be prepared to be involved in network related emergency handling activities
Job Requirements
- Experience with fiber splicing
- Fiber Blowing
- Chromatic Dispersion and PMD testing experience a plus
- Minimum two years of experience.
- Strong knowledge of Conduit
- Experience with adding fiber to existing conduits
- Telecommunications background preferred
- Valid Driving License.
- Training certificates in related fields is a plus.
- Ability to be relocated in any city as per the work requirements.
- Be able to work independently with minimum supervision.
- Be prepared to work on 24x7 bases
- Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.
- Flexible and responsive to changing work patterns and demands.
- Able to work as a member of a team.
- Open approach to solving problems and dealing with new proposals.
- Must be able to work to tight time scales.
- Analytical and investigative abilities.
