Job Description

Linux System Administrator (with rank of ‘Senior IT Specialist’)

The Centre for Theoretical Physics (CTP) at the British University in Egypt

The CTP is seeking a highly skilled Linux system administrator for its computing cluster.

  • Including running, networking, maintenance and installation and upgrading of software This, for a Linux cluster consisting of a Sun file and blade server, a sub-cluster of 8 Sun Ultra workstations, a Dell PowerEdge server and two Dell T-series workstations with ~ 110 CPU and ~ 1000 GPU cores.
  • The system is to be significantly enhanced and expanded in the coming period and the new admin is expected to lead the logistics of this expansion.
  • The system runs Oracle Enterprise Linux and Sun Grid Engine and the candidate should have experience with these or similar platforms.
  • Experience with, or serious interest in, coding and development of numerical (including parallel) computation methods, is highly desired.
  • The CTP offers a competitive compensation package and a congenial basic science academic research environment; plus an opportunity to apply IT skills in a challenging scientific research environment.

Job Requirements

Linux system administration.

  • The successful candidate should also be able to help with finalizing the process (already started) of adding the CTP system to the computer grid of the European Centre for Nuclear Research (CERN) as a working (Tier 3) node.
  • Normally, candidates with at least three years experience, with demonstrated competence in Unix/Linux system administration will be considered.

Programming and parallel computation

  • The system is primarily used for numerical computations in theoretical physics and scientific data analysis. Knowledge of C, C++, Python and shell scripting is desired and familiarity with MPI a great advantage. Someone with a track record in constructing, debugging and running of codes used for numerical computation and data analysis would be ideal. Nevertheless, serious interest in, and aptitude for, numerical computation methods and data analysis in science could be sufficient.
