Internship Description

Project Description

Smart and energy efficient irrigation systems: Opportunity I and II: available for students in Mechanical, Environmental, Civil or Computer Engineering or equivalent programmes.

Egypt uses more than 70% of its fresh Nile water on irrigation for food production.

Egypt is expanding its groundwater irrigated farming developments while reclaiming hundred thousand of hectares of desert land. Such promising projects are usually constrained by the amount of ground water available in non-renewable aquifers, while also needing to pay increasing costs of electricity/diesel oil to power the ground-water irrigation pumps.

This project will focus on reducing the costs of drip irrigation networks that are irrigated in sectors which can be watered at different times. In this project, the successful student will:

  • use advanced water network modelling to develop algorithms to design energy efficient irrigation systems on large farmlands. Students will target a significant reduction of water pressure requirements by hydraulic optimization, piping selection.
  • work on enhancing and validating water irrigation network proposals and will build a software to make algorithms more accessible to end users.
  • conduct a survey on using satellite data for remotely sensing the health and effectiveness of farming habits in Egypt.

Scope of Work

  • Students are asked to be punctual and committed. Work will be based inside the laboratory. Full guidance will be offered to students
  • Students will use an in-house model to perform a sensitivity analysis of the total system cost to total field size, total allowable irrigation time during the day, submain pipe diameter, lateral pipe diameter, and emitter flow rate.
  • Install the small drip irrigation network on the test site instrumented with pressure sensors. Students will operate the drip system to measure the pressure and validate the model. Students will measure the pressure drop across valves and fittings to test assumptions made in the hydraulic model about pressure losses in these components.
  • Synthesize results into a series of recommendations for small hold and large hold farmers in Egypt.

Benefits for the students:

  • Possibility to work in a high-quality research environment.
  • Participate in a real-life project and interact with a team of qualified engineers.
  • Certificate of Participation in the project.

Internship Details:

  • Internship Duration: Sunday 5th of July 2020 – Thursday 3 rd of September 2020
  • Deadline for Application: Thursday 25th of June 2020
