Internship Description

Project Description

Fluid flow is an essential mechanism of energy conversion and carries an essential function in energy systems. For example, oil or gas need to flow from their reservoirs to storage or treatment facilities in order to be useful for further use. And many engineering processes involve the flow of fluids, such as water/steam in Rankine cycles, or the heat transfer fluid that absorbs solar heat in CSP plants. But for flow to happen, energy is required in the form of pressure that induces fluid motion, where the pressure is made to overcome resistances along its path. Such resistances can be due to:

  • Friction inside the conduits that carry the flow; or
  • Change in flow cross-section due to obstructions.

Taking a biomedical analogy, a man's heart has to pump enough pressure to sustain blood motion in every vein and artery, overcoming resistances built up by the wall friction inside each and every blood vessel, in addition to fatty residues that accumulates in arteries over the years due to bad diets.

In this project, we use videogrammetry, which is an image processing technique, to analyze internal pipe inspection data and build models that predict flow behavior.

We use video recordings of internal pipe wall features and reconstruct computational models (digital twins) that would help us define the flow resistance and build decision support tools for actions handling inspection findings.

Scope of Work

  • Students are asked to be punctual and committed. Work will be based inside the laboratory. Full guidance will be offered to students.
  • Routine follow up with, and assistance of, lab researchers and engineers with weekly tasks:
  • Generating videogrammetry data from video recordings
  • Building 3D models of pipes using CAD software
  • Running CFD simulations using COMSOL or ANSYS.
  • Bi-weekly progress reports in the form of emails to research supervisor.

Benefits for the students:

  • Possibility to work in a high-quality research environment.
  • Participate in a real-life project and interact with a team of qualified engineers.
  • Certificate of Participation in the project.
  • A paid compensation will be given to the participants by the end of the internship.

Internship Details:

  • Internship Duration: Sunday 5th of July 2020 – Thursday 3 rd of September 2020
  • Deadline for Application: Thursday 25th of June 2020
