Organizational Context:

The Intern reports to the Liaison Associate under the overall supervision of the Senior Liaison Officer to the League of Arab States (LAS). The position may entail interaction activities on Protection/Policy including External Relations depending on the structure of the Office.

The Intern liaises with colleagues within the same Office, on matters of non-routine significance in order to prepare documents for the supervisor and manage the flow of information.

Regular contacts with officials from League of Arab States, from Affiliated Arab Organizations and Embassies/ Permanent Delegations to the League, are made to provide the Supervisor’s and the Representative with background information on relevant topics prior to the meetings, to respond queries on behalf of the supervisor at his/her discretions and to obtain assistance of others on matters of relevant to the Office.

The post requires the ability to prioritize tasks and to organize work independently based on direction from the supervisor.

Functional Statement:

  • Accountability

– Protection Notes and relevant UNHCR’s Positions are identified and addressed.

– Background documents on Protection issues for meetings are prepared in time.

– Agenda of Supervisor is prioritized in order to meet deadlines.

– Drafting the meeting reports.

  • Responsibility

Draft periodically regional reports on Refugee situation in the Arab League Space to be disseminated to LAS Secretariat and concerned Embassies.

– The incumbent will scan the research papers and sources of information, such as web-based media, newspapers journals, bulletins on refugee and internal displacement matters bearing up UNHCR’s activities in the MENA region, and keeping the Senior Liaison Officer briefed on their implications.

– S/he will assist the supervisor in drafting policy papers and reports on all related protection issues in refugee and internal displacement contexts in preparation of the joint Regional High Level Meetings in Cairo and in the region, particularly those related to the ongoing UNHCR- LAS campaign “I’m here” on Belonging and Legal Identity and Residency for Refugees.

– Ensure that the Supervisor is prepared for meetings by drafting Talking Points, by researching relevant information; and by establishing contacts (within and outside UNHCR) on the subject matters to be discussed.

– Accompany the Supervisor to meetings in order to prepare notes on the discussions, ensure follow-up in matters raised, and support the supervisor with any relevant input.

– Support the Supervisor in efforts to raise the profile of UNHCR within the context of broader LAS system.

– Maintain policy, confidential and general management files.

– Perform other related duties as required.
