Org. Setting and Reporting

UNODC Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (ROMENA) is offering an Internship with the Airport Communication Project (AIRCOP).

The internship is for four months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the project and availability of the intern.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the overall supervision of the UNODC Regional Representative for the Middle East and North Africa and the direct supervision of the AIRCOP Regional Project Officer.

Responsibilities

AIRCOP is jointly implemented by UNODC, INTERPOL and the World Customs Organization. The objective of the project is to root the culture of intelligence gathering and information sharing in the working routines of law enforcement agencies present at international airports and to develop their capacities to undertake intelligence-based risk analysis and profiling, with a view to detect and intercept high-risk passengers as well as illicit trafficking.

The internship candidate will be required to perform the following duties:

  • Conduct basic open-source research on airport criminalities across the region including terrorism, illicit trafficking and other forms of organized crime;
  • Prepare weekly news alerts and briefings on relevant topics;
  • Contribute to the elaboration of background documents, presentations, briefing notes, summaries, talking points and speeches;
  • Support AIRCOP communication and visibility through drafting, editing and designing of publications such as newsletters, leaflets and brochures;
  • Assist in the administrative preparation of national and regional technical assistance workshops, meetings, high-level events and conferences;
  • Assist in the preparation of meeting minutes and other internal documents;
  • Perform other tasks, as necessary.

Competencies

The United Nations Core Competencies include:

  • Planning and Organizing: Ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor work plans, prioritize competing demands and work to tight deadlines.
  • Communication: Ability to draft clearly and concisely, to communicate effectively, including the ability to prepare reports and conduct presentations by clearly formulating positions on issues, articulating options concisely, and making and defending recommendations.
  • Teamwork: Good interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from different national and cultural backgrounds to achieve organizational goals

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written Arabic and English is required for the internship. Knowledge of French is an asset.
