Internship Description

The IOM Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is based in Cairo, Egypt. The Regional Office provides programme support and technical expertise to IOM Country Offices in the region. Across the Middle East and North Africa, IOM employs approximately 1,500 staff and has offices in Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, the Syrian Arab Republic, Tunisia and Yemen.

Responsibilities and Accountability

Working under the overall direction of the Regional Director and the direct supervision of the both the MAD and LHD Regional Thematic Specialists in RO MENA, the Intern will provide technical and administrative support to the RTSs. The Intern will have the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist with the review, editing and provision of technical inputs for project concept notes and proposals; donor reports and other documents referred from country missions to the RO.
  • Provide project development support through drafting regional and country specific proposals on migrant assistance and migration and development issues, particularly for countries where IOM lacks or has limited presence;
  • Participate in the organization of capacity building initiatives for country missions, government and civil society partners by compiling training materials and assisting in the delivery of training;
  • Help analyze and share related thematic information (including issues, trends and data) as well as good practices with country missions, relevant colleagues and external parties;
  • Contribute to expanding the knowledge base of Migrant Assistance and Migration and Development work through facilitating the use of data management systems and compiling record of on-going projects, instructions, procedures or other relevant documentation ;
  • Undertake duty travel, as necessary
  • Perform other duties as required

Internship Requirements

Education

  • University degree from an accredited academic institution, preferably in Political or Social Sciences, Law and /or Business Administration, or alternatively, an equivalent combination of relevant training and field experience;
  • Familiarity with migrant rights; the different aspects of migrant vulnerability; trafficking in persons; and voluntary return and reintegration.
  • Familiarity with development dynamics; various aspects of diaspora engagement; Migrant integration; and labour mobility issues.

Experience

  • Experience in humanitarian work, including volunteer assignments, preferably on migration related issues an advantage.

Languages

  • Thorough knowledge of English
  • (An advantage) Arabic and/or French
