Job Description

Alfanar is looking for an ambitious, self-starter candidate passionate about social impact and entrepreneurship to fill the position of Finance & Program Investment Officer in Egypt.


The Finance & Program Investment Officer will assist Alfanar’s Egypt Director in managing an existing portfolio of six investments in Cairo, Helwan, Minia and Beni Sweif. Alfanar aims to add at least two new investments to its Egypt portfolio in 2015.

The Finance & Program Investment Officer would be responsible for supporting the Egypt Director in conducting financial and programmatic due diligence activities on prospective investees, conducting ongoing financial and programmatic assurance as part of investment performance monitoring, and working with investees to identify capacity-building needs and deliver training and coaching, both directly and through the support of consultants. Alfanar’s UK-based Finance Director will provide guidance, support and guidance to the Finance & Program Investment Officer on relevant responsibilities.


Specific responsibilities include:

  • Support Egypt Director in implementing Alfanar’s investment cycle with all investees, including investment selection, short-listing, due diligence, investment planning, assurance and monitoring, capacity-building, evaluation and auditing, reporting and exit
  • Using Alfanar’s policies and tools, conduct financial and programmatic due diligence with shortlisted candidates, identifying areas in need of support and capacity-building
  • Contribute to the design and development of Alfanar’s investment approach, systems and tools
  • Train Alfanar investees on Alfanar’s reporting templates and guidelines
  • Review and assess quarterly financial and programmatic reports, ensuring appropriate expenditure against budget, tracking beneficiary numbers and income generated by investees, and monitoring achievement of other social impact targets
  • Support the operation of Alfanar’s monitoring and evaluation processes and systems and the collection and analysis of outcome and output data
  • Maintain regular, active, supportive contact with investees through weekly catch-up calls and quarterly field visits
  • Help maintain and grow Alfanar Egypt’s portfolio of social investments by proactively recommending and looking into prospective investees and supporting Director with short-listing activities
  • Prepare quarterly investment progress reports
  • Support Egypt Director in reporting to current donors, identifying prospective donors, and preparing funding proposals
  • Support the development and monitoring of Alfanar Egypt’s annual budget and cash flow, including the maintenance of financial records and the development of monthly financial reports
  • Assist Egypt Director with annual audit, Ministry reporting and correspondence, and other legal or administrative matters that may arise
  • Identify and build relationships with a small range of financial auditors who can be commissioned for project audits or financial investigations
  • Liaise with Alfanar’s UK finance director with respect to the assessment and development of investee financial management capacity
  • Identify and build relationships with a small range of capacity-building suppliers [Support areas may include: financial management and bookkeeping, cash management, payroll, financial forecasts, project design, budgeting, pricing, cost accounting, branding and marketing, etc.]
  • Work with Egypt Director and investees to assess and set capacity-building plans aimed at helping investees achieve minimum standards of bookkeeping, accounting, financial management and internal control as well as strengthening their impact delivery

Job Requirements

  • Passionate about sustainable development, social entrepreneurship, education and women’s economic empowerment in Egypt; understanding of venture philanthropy
  • 5 years experience in managing finances, budgets and financial reports, ideally in an NGO setting with exposure to working with grassroots organisations and programmatic activities
  • A good understanding of the financial control environment to be expected in an NGO setting
  • Excellent aptitude for and interest in financial management and control arrangements
  • At least Bachelor degree in relevant discipline or qualification in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent experience
  • Strong interpersonal, networking and analytical skills
  • Strong writing skills (in Arabic and English)
  • Adept at Excel
